Icelandic sailor (Ijslandvaarder)

As early as the 17th century there was mention of Icelandic voyagers.
With sailing ships, the voyage lasted six months, from spring to late summer. The last Belgian Iceland voyager to earn a living with the classic Iceland voyage from northern France on sailing ships was Theophiel Decroo in 1934. The last Flemish Iceland voyager was Engel Puystiens, who died at the age of 95. Bonte from Adinkerke was the last surviving Iceland voyager. He made three six-month voyages from Dunkirk and died in 1979.
Icelandic fishing is the practice of fishing in the Icelandic fishing grounds of the continental shelf around Iceland by fishing vessels from various countries, including Belgium , the Netherlands , Germany , Great Britain , and the United States . Thousands of fishermen earned their living on Icelandic fishing; their vessels were called IJslanders (Icelanders). The waters around Iceland were abundant with fish, especially cod . Small vessels could sometimes catch 6,000 kg of fish per day.
Icelanders? They were West Flemish skippers who, in a bleak past, braved the cold and storms to fish thousands of kilometers north, in a sea that gives and takes. With a bit of luck, they were back home within six months. A forgotten piece of history now being revived by the folk group Spilar .
