Devonshire: a Privateer and the Spanish ship that never was

In 1981, Bermuda issued a stamp (SG435) showing a privateer, the "Devonshire" approaching a Spanish ship. In fact the ship was British and had its nationality changed by the designer changing the flag.http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/download/file.php?mode=view&id=16958 The book "...

Re: WEST RIDING barque 1875

Hi

My reading says 15 on lifeboat. Whatever the actual loss was, it defines "tragedy"; an overused word in today's world.

No "New Topic" button on Ships Stamp Collection

Hi

Am I doing something wrong? I want to post about the " Devonshire" (17th C Bermudan Privateer) but there is no "New Topic" button. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Re: Basilisk HMS

The "Wikipedia" entry for "HMS Basilisk of 1848" lists armament. Also involvement in the "screw v paddle" propulsion trials.

Re: Highflyer 1851

The Royal Museums, Greenwich has this description of the print: "numerous British ships moored there. The 'Cumberland' is shown in the foreground on the right. The prints is inscribed above: 'View of the town and harbour of Port Royal in Jamaica, taken from sea.' Inscribed below the image: 'No ...

Re: AGE UNLIMITED raft

There is an excellent book on Willis, by T.R. Pearson, "Seaworthy", which is well worth reading. As well as much gory detail -his first hernia - it also set his voyages in the context of other rafters.

Re: Vindex HMS

Hi John

I think this one is wrong as the stamp, pictured, matches the other "Vindex" entry. Intrigued to know if their is a stamp that fits the description as I would add it to my collection!

Thanks Auke, that's just brilliant; it gives me another "Clydebuilt" and that's my main interest.

Cheers

It's actually Ferguson at Port Glasgow who built her. The inhabitants of "The Port" don't like their thunder being pinched by Glasgow!

Re: MORNING STAR 1976

The stamp says "First container ship". As it, obviously, isn't the "first" container ship I wonder what "first" is actually being claimed. First to dock at Tuvalu? Would be interested to find out more.

Rock of Gibraltar and ships

I suspect this question has been answered before - if their is an answer - but I cannot find it. Any idea what the ships are in these Gib stamps?

SG110-113 and 122,123

Cheers
