She was built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard No 273 by Caird & Company, Greenock for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, Greenock.
19 May 1894 launched as the CALEDONIA, launched by Miss Ethel Barnes, daughter of P&O Managing Director Mr F D Barnes.
Tonnage 7,558 grt, 3,528 net, 4,234 dwt, dim. 148.08 (bpp.) x 16.51 x 7.98m. draught 8.2m.
Powered by 5-cyl triple-expansion steam engines manufactured by builder, 1,610 nhp (11,000 ihp), one shaft, speed 18,5 knots.
Passenger capacity 315 first-class, 175-second class.
Cargo capacity 3,767 cubic metres (133,044 cubic feet).
Crew [1914] 294 (117 Europeans, 177 Asians). Deck 23 Europeans, 48 Asians; engine room 12 Europeans, 88 Asians; purser’s department 99 Europeans, 41 Asians
25 August 1894 trials in which she made a speed of 19.5 knots.
August 1894 delivered to owners. Building cost £233,729.

She was built for the United Kingdom to India service, painted with a white hull, but reverted after two years to P&O colours with a black painted hull.
1901 Ran aground of Southend and in 1906 at Suez, 1911 again aground in Plymouth.
1913 she made three Mediterranean cruises
When World War I broke out she stayed on this service till she on 14.12.1916, struck two mines 5km (3 miles) east of Planier Island Light, off Marseilles. Her 500 passengers were discharged into boats within fifteen minutes and a skeleton crew took her into Marseilles where she was repaired and returned to service.
29.12.1917: Commissioned as a troop transport (No C6021) in which capacity she carried over 104,000 troops without loss. 1920: 1920 Refitted by Alexander Stephen and Sons Ltd., Linthouse, Glasgow, and returned to commercial service.
1925 A routine examination at Bombay showed her propeller shaft was cracked. 25.07.1925: Sold for demolition to Goolam Hossein Essaji, Bombay, for £10,000.
