ACTAEON HMS 1831

Built as a 6th Rate vessel by Portsmouth Dry-dock for the Royal Navy.
23 October 1827 ordered.
September 1828 keel laid down.
31 January 1831 launched under the name ACTAEON one of the Conway Class.
Tonnage 620 ton (bm), dim.37.06 x 10.39 x 2.95m., length of keel 30.60m.
Armament: Upper deck 20 – 32pdr. gunnades, quarter deck 4 – 32pdr. carronades, forecastle 2 – 9pdr or 2 – 32pdrs carronades.
Crew 175.
16 April 1831 completed.

November 1830 commissioned under command of Capt. Frederick William Grey, and after completing used in the Mediterranean.
November 1834 under command of Capt. Lord Edward Russell for the South America Station.
She visited Pitcairn in 1837 on a voyage from Tahiti. 10 January 1838 during a storm arrived off the island, the next day was also very bad but on the 12th the weather improved, and it was possible for the captain to land.
After he landed he was met by the islanders to settle their disputes and to make enquiries about Joshua Hill, the self styled ‘dictator’ who had arrived in 1826.
A full enquire highlighted his unpopularity and Capt Russell ordered Hill to leave the island by the first opportunity.
August 1838 at Portsmouth and under command of Capt. Russell she sailed again for South America.
1844 Under command of Capt. George Mansel and sailed December 1844 for the coast of Africa.
09 September 1847 captured the slavers ASTREA and THERESA.
1848 Out of commission in Portsmouth.
1857 Re-commissioned as a survey vessel for the China coast and Tartary, under command of Capt. Wm. Thornton Bate.
28 December 1857 during the Second Opium War he was shot dead by a gingal ball during the bombardment of Canton.
30 December 1857 replaced by Capt. Robert Jenkins.
1 March 1858 under command of John Ward. He was responsible for carrying out surveys in preparation for the military operations of August 1859.
1866 Out of commission at Portsmouth, becoming a hospital ship.
February 1870 lent to the Cork Harbour Board as a hulk.
1874 In use for torpedo experiments, attached to HMS VERNON.
February 1889 sold to J. Read in Portsmouth for breaking up.
