She was inward bound for New York, while the STOCKHOLM was outward bound for Gothenburg.
Only one of ANDREA DORIA’s watertight compartments was flooded but contrary to the predictions of her designers she at once took a heavy list, which thereafter slowly increased till some open portholes got underwater, and more water was pouring in.

She sank around 10.00 a.m. on 26 July. While the heavy list made it almost impossible to launch her lifeboats, most of the passengers and crew were rescued.

The STOCKHOLM while herself badly damaged took on board 533 persons, before she returned to New York. 47 Persons on board the ANDREA DORIA lost there life.

2010 German Post has issued a series of stamps in honor of the famous German musician Udo Lindenberg and his two songs "Andrea Doria" and "Special train to Pankow".
Udo Lindenberg was born in 1946 in Westphalia, Gronau. Lindenberg writes German rock music texts and in 1959 he assembles his first band.
In the first year of his international breakthrough with the single "All clear on the Andrea Doria" Lindenberg creates parallels to life on a sinking luxury liner. The Italian liner Andrea Doria, pride of the Italian cruise fleet, sank on 26 July 1956 after a collision.
In the song "Special train to Pankow", which spontaneously becomes a hit, Lindenberg dreams of an open inter-German border.
Udo Lindenberg's youth slang communicates the feeling of his time, his songs are always provocative, they reflect social and political issues.

The stamp in matter is this:
Udo Lindenberg - Ship Andrea Doria.jpg

The designer draws it stylized with two funnels, in reality the ANDREA DORIA had only a funnel.
