TVERDYI ship-of-the-line 1805

The 10k value depicts the Battle of Athos from 19 till 29 June 1807, and an imago of Vice-Admiral Senyavin (1763-1831). The vessels depict on the stamp are the Turkish vessel SADD AL-BAHIR (1799), and the Russian ships TVERDYI (1805) and SKORYI (1805).

Built in 1805 as a wooden ship-of-the-line for the Imperial Russian Navy, armed with 74 guns.
Launched as TVERDYI, also given as TVERDIY, TVERDY and TVYORDIY (firm).
Dim. 56.7 x 15.1 x 6.5m.

After completing she joined the Imperial Russian Baltic Fleet, under command of Capt. Maleev she sailed on 22 September 1805 from Kronstadt for the Mediterranean in the squadron of Rear-Admiral Senyavin.
She was Senyavin’s flagship
Stayed from 21 October till 28 November at Portsmouth, at Gibraltar 26 December, at Cagliari, Italy from 10 till 19 January 1806, Messina, Italy from 23 till 28 January 1806.
30 January 1806 arrived at Corfu.
19 till 29 June 1807 took part in the Battle of Athos as flagship of Rear-Admiral Senyavin, where the Russian squadron battled the Turkish fleet.

After the Treaty of Tilsit was signed between France and Russia in 1807, the Russian squadron came in a difficult position.
The squadron under command of Senyavin left Corfu on 01 October 1807 with nine ships-of-the-line and two frigates bound for the Baltic.
20 October 1807 the squadron passed Gibraltar.
09 November 1807 entered the River Tagus for Lisbon to repair damage sustained in the bad weather which she had met.

When the British were informed that the Russian warships were in Lisbon port, the port was blockaded by British warships which had escorted the Portuguese Royal Family to Brazil.
03 September 1807 the Russian fleet surrendered to the British fleet, and sailed to the U.K.under the Russian ensigns and the ships were interned in Portsmouth on 08 October 1808.
The Russian crew were allowed from Lisbon to proceed to Russia in British transports.

1813 The TVERDYI was sold in the U.K., most probably for breaking up, she was not more seaworthy.
