OCEAN whaler

By the stamp was given the OCEAN was a ship rigged vessel of 350 tons, from New Bedford, commanded by Captain Holdenlemy. She was recorded in the Pacific in 1842 and again in 1847, owned by J.R. Thornton of New Bedford.

Her first whaling voyage she made from Nantucket under command of Capt Tim. Fitzgerald.
17 August 1822 she sailed out for the whaling grounds in the Pacific and returned on 16 April 1825, with on board 1,990 brls. sperm-oil. She is given as 349 tons ship rigged. Not an owner given.

Her second whaling voyage was again under Capt. Fitzgerald, she left Nantucket on 02 August 1825 for the whaling grounds of the Pacific and she returned on 18 May 1828 with on board 1,807 brls. sperm-oil.

Her third voyage was under command of Capt.Edwin Coffin, she sailed on 15 December 1828 from Nantucket for the whaling grounds of the Pacific, returned on 14 November 1831 with on board 2,270 brls. sperm-oil.

Her fourth voyage was under command of Capt. Elijah Parker, the owner is then given as T&P Macy, she sailed on 16 June 1832 for the Pacific, returned on 13 November 1835 with on board 1,490 brls. sperm-oil.

Her sixth whaling voyage was again under command of Capt. Parker, she sailed from Nantucket on05 September 1836 to the whaling grounds of the Pacific, returned 8 July 1840 with on board 1,847 brls. sperm-oil.

Her seventh voyage was again under Capt. Parker, she left Nantucket 18 October 1840 for the Pacific whaling grounds, returned on 03 October 1844 with on board 1,662 brls. sperm-oil.
After discharging was she sold to New Bedford.

She was bought by J.R. Thornton, New Bedford, not renamed.
Her eight voyage was under Capt Almy for the whaling grounds in the Indian Ocean, she sailed from New Bedford on 02 January 1845 and returned on 07 November 1848 with on board 1,380 brls of sperm-oil and 20 brls. whale-oil.

Her ninth voyage was under Capt. Driggs, she sailed from New Bedford on 7 July 1849 for the Pacific whaling grounds, returned on 15 April 1853 with on board 1,270 brls sperm-oil and 49 brls. whale-oil. During the voyage the fourth mate Michael Taylor died in 1852.

Her tenth voyage was under Capt. William C. Faller, when she sailed on 27 May 1853 for the Pacific whaling grounds, she returned on 29 June 1856 with on board 1,563 brls. sperm-oil, during the voyage she already sent home 403 brls. sperm-oil.

Her eleventh voyage was under command of Capt. Ezra Gifford when she sailed from New Bedford on 22 October 1856 for the Pacific whaling grounds, she returned on 11 August 1859 with on board 2,101 brls. sperm-oil.

Sailed for her twelfth voyage again under Capt. Gifford when she left New Bedford on 29 November 1859 for the whaling grounds in the Pacific Ocean, returned on 28 October 1863 with only 220 brls. sperm-oil on board.

Her thirteenth voyage was under Capt. Albert D. Barber for the whaling grounds of the North Pacific, she sailed from New Bedford on 15 November 1865 and returned on 23 June 1869 with on board 387 brls. sperm-oil and 16 brls. whale-oil, sent during the voyage already home 25 brls. sperm-oil, 725 brls. whale-oil and 22,112 bone.

Then she disappears from the History of the American Whale Fisheries by Alexander Starbuck, most probably not more used in the whale fisheries. She was owned till 1869 by J.R. Thornton.
