Amphion HMS

HMS AMPHION. Cruiser 6,908 tons with 3-6', 8-4" guns. Built at Portsmouth Dock Yard 26th July 1934. Renamed PERTH and transferred to Australia June 1939. Belonged to the Leander class. In World War II saw service in the Med. before transferring to Eastern waters, and as HMAS PERTH, was sunk in the Zara Sea on 1st March 1942.

H.M.S. AMPHION. Submarine of 'A' class. Built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow 31/8/1944. First of class to be completed for service in Far East, but on VE-day (May 1945) was only running trials in Scottish waters. She arrived at T.W. Ward Inverkeithing to be broken up on
6th July 1971. N.B. The design on the stamp shows a dragon's head facing to the LEFT, but in P. Smith's book R.N. Ships Badges published by Balfour in 1974, the dragons head is shown facing to the RIGHT.
