Queen Mary HMS (1913 Battle cruiser)

HMS QUEEN MARY. Battle cruiser of Lion class. Built by Palmers, laid down 6th March 1911. Launched 20th. March 1912. Completed September 1913, at a cost of £2,078.49. First battlecruiser with 13.5' guns and central turrets.
First of ships to cost over £2 million. Commissioned January 1913 for 1st. C.S. and 1st. B.C.S. from January 1915. Took part in Battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland as part of 1st B.C.S. Sunk at Jutland by gunfire from German Ships SEYDLITZ and DERFFINGER, when both opened fire on her. For about 5 minutes QUEEN MARY took hits with apparently no effect and she returned fire in perfect salvos. Then a salvo hit the deck forward, there was a dazzling flash of red flame and then a heavy explosion amidships. QUEEN MARY rolled slowly
to starboard, with a large hole in her side, then she turned over completely and sank in one and a half minutes. Of her crew of 1283, 67 officers and 1209 men were killed or lost. 2 officers and 5 men were wounded and 1 officer and 1 man were rescued by German destroyers.
