VICKO BUJOVIC

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Oct 02, 2010 8:32 pm

The 0.60 Euro stamp issued in 2009 by Montenegro depicts a sailing vessel and a portrait of Vicko Bujovic. Of the sailing vessels nothing is known, it's most probably an image of a ship of that time frame.

Vicko Bujović (1660-1709) was one of the most popular figures in Perast during the Baroque period. He was an excellent seaman and merchant and a rational ‘captain’ (head of the town administration) of Perast. As a warrior, he distinguished himself during the liberation of the town of Herceg Novi from Turkish rule in 1687. Because of his bravery shown in the battle the Republic of Venice gave him a large property and awarded him with the title of a ‘conte’ (count). In 1694, Vicko Bujović built one of the most beautiful palaces in Perast, which symbolized his economic and social status.
However, Vicko’s fierce temper and his arrogant behaviour brought him into conflict with other families of Parast, which ended in his tragic murder in a town square.
