1996 SUMMER OLYMPICS

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Nov 26, 2010 8:12 pm

In one of the final attempts to persuade Olympic officials to award the 1996 Summer Olympic Games to Athens, Greece issued a set of five stamps on the Olympics theme on 13 July 1990.
The 20dr. value depicted a (stylish) sailboat.
Greece based its campaign on the sentiment that Athens hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896, and it would be fitting for Athens to also host the centennial of the modern games.
The Olympic Committee thought otherwise, however, and on 18 September 1990 awarded the Games to Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
