JANGADA

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Dec 09, 2010 7:33 pm

The JANGADA raft is mostly used for fishing and transportation off Ceará and Bahia States, Brazil . The raft type has not been changed for more as 400 years.
The smaller is made of 4 or 5 balsa type logs, while the larger used 8 logs, lashed together to make a raft.
The logs are pointed at the ends or blunt, slightly upturned.
She may have a short keel or a daggerboard fitted just abaft the mast, either between the centre logs or into a slot cut through the centre log.
Steered by a 3 metre long steering oar that fits into a slot on starboard or port depending on the tack.
Light curved mast one third from the bow supported by a sturdy bench like rest; she is secured by a single shifting backstay.
Baggy, triangular sail held out with a sprit boom placed well up the mast, as seen on the stamp.
Lacing starts above the boom so that it can be unshipped and sail wrapped around the mast while fishing.
She is launched from the beach by using large wooden rollers, but she is quickly waterlogged and must be dried out between trips.
Nowadays some carried an outboard motor.
The JANGADA has not a long life, mostly after a year she is discarded.
Length 3 - 8.7m., width 1 – 1.6m
Till today still used by the Janadeiros fishermen in Brazil who fish with this raft up to 60 miles off the coast
.
