Built as a tug supply vessel under yard No 567 by Ferguson Alisa, Glasgow for the Townsend Holding Ltd., Canada.
17 October 1985 launched as the FORT RESOLUTION.
Tonnage 1,231 grt, 966 ton dwt., dim. 65.39 x 12.80 x 5.35m., length bpp. 58.33m, draught 4.58m.
Powered by two Mirrlees Blackstone MB 275 diesel engines, each 3,083 bhp, twin variable propellers, speed 15 knots.
Ice strengthened.
Fitted out with a bow thruster of the Ulstein CP type 90 TV-500 with a 500 hp engine.
Bollard pull 55 ton.
Accommodation for 12 crew and 12 passengers.
March 1986 completed.

After completing used to supply the Canadian oil platforms in the Canadian Arctic waters.

1988 Sold to Feronia International Shipping Antarctic Terr. (France) an affiliate of Company Nacional de Navegacio (CNN).
Between 10 July and 9 October, 1988 rebuilt by Grupo de Talleres y Astilleros le Havre, la Sociedad Siren, in Antarctic supply and research vessel.
A new accommodation block was fitted with accommodation for 50 scientists or passengers. A helideck was fitted on top of the accommodation block of 162 m², suitable to be used by Lama or Ecureuil helicopters.
A heavy crane of 32 tons for loading and discharging in the Antarctic, and sophisticated satellite navigation and communication systems
Tonnage 1,753 grt, 659 net, 949 dwt.
Renamed in AUSTRAL FISH, the stamp show only the name FISH on the bow of the vessel which is wrong.

The same year chartered by a French Antarctic Expedition, renamed in L”ASTROLABE.
15 October 1988 sailed from Le Havre for her first voyage to the Antarctic, after a call at Cape Town she sailed to Hobart, Tasmania where 50 EPF scientists embarked, and on 2 December she left for Adelie Land, six days later she arrived on the French base Dumont d’Urville.
28 April 1989 she arrived again in Le Havre.
Every year since 1988-89 she is chartered to resupply Dumont d’Urville.
In addition, it regularly carries passengers and cargo for the joint French and Italian station of Concordia at Dome C.

August 1991 the L’ASTROLABE became the first European ship since 1922 to complete the Northeast Passage through the Arctic to Japan during a collaborative French, Japanese and Russian expedition.
27 July 1991 she sailed from Le Havre, arrived at Murmansk 03 August, then she passed the Bering Strait on 27 August and arrived at Hakodate, Japan on 02 September 1991.
Her homeward voyage is via the Indian Ocean and Suez Canal.

When the AURORA AUSTRALIS was damaged by fire the L’ASTROLABE was chartered for one voyage by the Australian Antarctic Division during the summer of 1998/99.

2005 Was she owned by Bourbon Offshore Surf Sas.
2007 Owned and managed by P&O Maritime Services SARL Hauts de Seine, France, and managed by P&O Maritime Services Sarl, Melbourne.

2017 Same owners and managers, under French flag with homeport Marseilles. IMO No 8418198.

March 2017 sold to Nakunaku Ltd., Tauranga, New Zealand, renamed in YWAN LIBERTY under the Cook Islands flag and registry with homeport Avatiu.
2021 In service, same name, and owners.
