Leander (clipper)

Leander was a composite built clipper ship. Leander, from the Hero and Leander myth, is a character from Greek myth, and has given his name to clipper. She was designed by Bernard Waymouth, and built in 1867 by J G Lawrie of Glasgow for Joseph Somes. She had a raised quarter deck 42 ft long. The main topgallant sail was rigged with Colling and Pinkney's roller reefing gear. In command of Captain Petherick she sailed in 1868 October 27 - January 30 from Plymouth to Shanghai in 95 days. 1870 October 12 - January 18
Sailed from Shanghai to London in 98 days with a cargo of 1.137.000 lbs of tea. Before 1871, Leander sailed between London and the Far East (China). In command of Captain M.J. Knight 1871 August 3 - November 20 sailed from Amoy to New York in 109 days and later she was in the tea trade until 1879. 1880 November 16 Grounded at Port Phillip Heads. Re-rigged as a barque in the 1890s, the ship was sold to R. Anderson of London, then to Ross & Company. Her last owner was Seyed Youssouf bin Ahmed Zuwawee of Oman and was renamed Nusrool Mujeed in 1895 and broken up in 1901.
