VASCO DA GAMA 1841

Built as a first rate ship-of-the-line by Arsenal Real da Marinha, Lisbon for the Portuguese Navy.
24 June 1824 keel laid down, intended name CIDADE DE LISBOA but renamed before launching.
02 September 1841 launched.
Displacement 3,200 tons, dim. 61.48 length of keel, 14.70 m.
Armament: 74/80 guns.
Crew 650.
02 September 1841 commissioned under the name VASCO DA GAMA.

She was the last nau built for the Portuguese Navy.
Early 1849 she sailed to Brazil, to show the flag and protect Portuguese citizens there.
During a heavy storm when in Guanabara Bay, Brazil she lost her three masts, she was towed into Rio de Janeiro for repair.
October 1858 carried men and cattle to the military colony of Huila, Angola.
1862 Assigned to the Naval Reserve Division and became the first training ship for naval artillery.
1869 Transported an expedition to Zambia for the Bongo campaign.
1873 Out of service.
1876 Broken up.
