AFRICANA fishery research vessel

The vessel depict on this stamp is the AFRICANA a fishery research vessel of the South African Government. A photo of the AFRICANA depict in Marine News 1983/307 is the same as the vessel depict on the stamp.

Built as a trawler-research vessel under yard No 5700 by Dorbyl Marine at Durban.
21 November 1980 launched as the AFRICANA.
Tonnage 2,452 grt, 910 dwt., dim. 77.85 x 15.25 x 5.70m. (draught).
Powered by a diesel engine , 3,900 hp, speed 14 knots.
Bunker capacity 532 m³ oil, fresh water 460m³.
Endurance 45 days.
Accommodation for 10 officers, 23 crew and 19 scientists.
Eight laboratories and three containerised labs.
February 1982 completed.

She is doing research and monitoring to guide management of South Africa’s offshore fisheries.
She was refitted in 2001.

2011 In service, IMO No. 7905405. Owned by Marine and Coastal Management (Department of Environmental Affairs), South Africa.
