Built as a landing ship by At. Francais de l’Quest, Grand Quevilly for the French Navy.
09 October 1981 keel laid down.
28 April 1982 launched as the JACQUES CARTIER (L 9033) one of the Batral class.
Displacement 770 ton empty, 1,330 ton loaded. Dim. 80 x 13 x 3m. (draught).
Powered by two SACM Wärtsilä UD 33 V12 M4 diesel engines, 3,600 hp. twin shafts, speed maximum 16 knots, service speed 13 knots.
Range 4,500 miles by a speed of 13 knots.
Armament: 2 – 81mm mortars, 2 – 20mm AA and 2 - 12.7mm MG.
Helicopter platform aft.
Crew 3 officers and 26 crew and 16 mariners.
Can carry around 400 ton stores or equipment and an intervention unit of 5 officers, 15 petty officers and 118 men and 12 vehicles.
One 10 ton crane.
Fitted out with a bow ramp for discharging on a beach or in a harbour.
28 September 1983 commissioned.

After completing based in New Caledonia.
She was used in the Australian led INTERFET in East Timor peace keeping task force from 28 November 1999 to 12 January 2000.

2006 She provided help for the flood hit Wallis and Futuna after cyclone Toma hit the islands, and will transport some passengers and school children between Wallis and Fatuna.

2011 In service.

The MULTRATUG 3 spotted September 6th. 2016 departing from Brest with in tow the former French navy LST JACQUES CARTIER, bound for the Galloo breakers in Ghent (Belgium)
