Pahi

Post by john sefton » Tue Jun 14, 2011 3:54 pm

Pahi. A double‑sail vessel, considered a masterpiece of native shipbuilding art, and one of the most sophisticated craft in Polynesia. It was wide; deep hulled pointed canoes decked over made it seaworthy; and its two large sails, fore and aft situated, made it one of the best sailing craft which linked the many atolls of the Tuamotu Archipelago and other Polynesian islands.

Pahi of Tuamotu Archipelago. In present day usage, pahi means a ship or vessel. Earlier, the word referred to a large, seagoing double canoe that was extinct by the late 19th century. Details given in the few reports vary, probably due to local differences in this long archipelago. Earlier hulls planked in short lengths sewn together, and sometimes joints were covered with tortoise shell. One hull somewhat shorter than the other; slightly asymmetric in shape longitudinally; mainly V-shaped in cross section;bottom curved toward the sharp ends. On some, the sheer strake extended beyond a breakwater to join a supplemental endpost forming an open, triangular area at each end. Hulls joined by a number of stout booms that passed through the top strakes; solid platform covered the area between the hulls as well as part or all of one or both hulls. Steered with 1-2 long oars with a loom that flared at the blade and was then cut square; oar fixed by a short crossbar on the end of the platform, or by a crutch across the end of the hull;steering oar shifted when sailed in the opposite direction. A shelter was placed on the windward side of the platform. Stepped 1-2 masts on the platform, setting V-shaped sails or a single large sail on either mast ,depending on the direction. Reported length 9-30m; e.g., length of hull 14.5m, beam 1.05m,depth 1,4m.
