BARCA DA XAVEGA: Mostly used for the tuna fishing off the coast of Algarve with a seine net.
Carvel planked of local pine; planking horizontal at the high ends. Planking pegged to frames.
Flat bottom for half its length and then curved up in a graceful sweep.
The design of the craft is under influence of the Mediterranean ship design.
Stem is higher than the sternpost.
Heavy rubbing strake outside the gunwale.
Open decked only decked with a short deck on the bow, usually 7 thwarts.
Carried on the bow an oculi.
Steered with an oar. Rowed with 2 – 4 ten metre long oars, manned by 5-7 men.
Crew 15 men.
Reported length 8.2 – 16.5m. e.g. length 16.5m, beam 3.8m. depth 1.5m.
