BARBARY CORSAIR 1655

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jul 06, 2011 8:51 pm

The stamp gives that the vessel depict on this stamp is a Barbary Corsair from France of 1655.
I believe the vessel depict is not a corsair nor coming from French or the Barbary coast (North Africa).

The three flags on the ship shows that she is a Verenigde Oostindiesche Company VOC ship from the Zeven Provincies (Netherland); on the foremast she carried the flag of the town of Amsterdam, so it is a ship from the VOC of the Chamber of Amsterdam. The flag on the mainmast is the VOC flag, while the flag on the mizzen mast is the Dutch flag.
Which ship of the VOC is depict I don’t known, but the VOC so far I known has never been in battle with the Barbary corsairs, there trade was between the Netherlands and the Far East via Cape of Good Hope.

More info on the Barbary corsairs you can find on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_corsairs
