H. G. JOHNSON

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Aug 13, 2011 3:58 am

Built as a cargo vessel by G.E. Currier, Newburyport for Wm. A Johnson, Newbury, Mass.
Launched as the H.G. JOHNSON.
Tonnage 1,082 grt, 981 net, dim. 176 x 37 x 21.5ft.
Barque rigged.
1877 Completed.

Her maiden voyage was under command of Captain Isaac N. Colby; he was also a shareholder in the ship.
She sailed from New York to Melbourne, then Hong Kong and Shanghai before returning to Boston, U.S.A. The voyage took from 1877 till 1880.
On a voyage from Caleta Buena, Chile loaded with nitrate to New York in a position 50 45 S and 42 52W she met several giant icebergs on 22 April 1892, and three days later the little barque was surrounded by many icebergs and it took all the seamanship of the crew to keep free of the icebergs.
27 April she was surrounded on all sides by giant icebergs and she had to hove to for two days before they found an opening to escape. It was a miracle that the barque was not crushed between the icebergs as some were coming very close by.

Captain Colby stayed on board until 1897 when command was taken over by Captain A. Soria.
1900 Her owner is given as W.W. Rice, Boston, Mass. not renamed.
Lloyds Register 1901/02 gives her dimensions as 199.5 x 36.8 x 21.8ft, and her owner as N.W. Rice in Boston.

Her fate not known.
