The NIVÔSE is a light surveillance frigate ("frégate de surveillance") of the French Marine Nationale. She is the third ship of the Floréal class, and the fourth French vessel named after the 4th month of the Republican Calendar.
2001
In October 2001, she was deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
2008
In late 2008, under frigate captain Jean-Marc Le Quilliec, NIVÔSE was deployed as part of a European Union expeditionary force, Operation Atalanta, in the Gulf of Aden to fight piracy off Somalia.
2009 On 15 April 2009, she captured eleven pirates 900 km (550 miles) East of Mombasa, and thwarted an attack on the Liberian-registered merchantman Safmarine Asia.
On 12 April 2009, NIVÔSE relieved her sister-ship FLORÉAL as part of European Union Naval Force Somalia – Operation ATALANTA. On 3 May 2009, 900 km off Somalia, the crew managed to lure pirates to attack the ship by sailing into the sun to avoid being identified and mistaken for a merchantman; as the pirate closed in, she turned about and launched her on-boarded helicopter and fast outboard vessels. Eleven pirates were captured.

Biter bitten as French navy nets 11 Somali pirates

As the pirates zeroed in on their prey, the dazzling sun on the horizon concealed a nasty surprise: the ship they were hunting was not a merchant vessel but a French warship.

Sailing near the outer bounds of the Seychelles archipelago's waters in the Indian Ocean on Sunday just after dawn, the pirates spotted their potential victim from afar.

But the trademark 9 metre pirate "mother-ship" escorting two small skiffs had been spotted long before by its intended prey, a French warship bristling with cannons, state-of-the-art radar technology and well-trained servicemen.

The frigate NIVÔSE, one of the ships patrolling the region as part of the European Union anti-piracy mission Atalanta, made sure to keep the pirates thinking it was a merchant vessel.

"Visual on two skiffs." NIVÔSE lieutenant commander Jean-Marc Le Quilliec dashes out of his cabin, certain that the pirates spotted by a Spanish vessel the previous day are at his mercy.

At around 0500 GMT (1500 AEST) the French vessel moved into the sun to keep its cover.
"They're speeding right towards us," Le Quilliec marvelled. "Let's just head into the sun and then we'll turn around to hit them head on."

When the unsuspecting pirates were close enough, the NIVÔSE unleashed commandos on outboards and dispatched a helicopter to interdict the pirates, leaving them no chance.

"It's the exact same location as the case of the Safmarine Asia," lieutenant commander Jean-Marc Le Quilliec said, referring to an interception his ship carried out on April 15 during an attack on a Liberia-flagged merchant vessel.

The helicopter fired two warning shots to stop one of the two skiffs from fleeing. There was only one pirate left on the mother-ship, which was also intercepted moments later, with nothing on board except fuel and potatoes.

"He apparently thought the pirates had hijacked us," said Le Quilliec.
The French forces found two Kalashnikov assault rifles on one of the skiffs, ammunition, a rocket-launcher and five grenades which were deemed a hazard by the Nivose command and tossed into the sea.

The 11 captured pirates, some of them very young, looked exhausted and were made to sit on the deck with their hands on their heads as French forces searched them.

"The guys we catch are getting younger and younger," said one navy soldier. "Look at this one, he can't be 17."
Senior officers on the ship said a decision would be made later on whether or not the suspects would be transferred and where to.

In recent weeks, the French navy has handed over dozens of suspected pirates to the authorities of Puntland -- a northern Somali breakaway state which is a major piracy hub -- and Kenya.

The European Union and the United States have memoranda of understanding with Kenya to facilitate the transfer of suspected pirates to the courts in the coastal city of Mombasa.

In a bid to avoid the heavily-patrolled shipping lanes of the Gulf of Aden, some pirate groups have ventured further out into the Indian Ocean.

Several incidents were recently reported in the exclusive economic zone of the Seychelles, a small Indian Ocean nation which is a base for foreign fishing fleets and a notorious destination for luxury cruise liners.

2010
From 5 to 7 March 2010, joining mission forces from France, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain and Sweden, NIVÔSE secured its "biggest seizure" so far in the vital shipping lane, with 35 pirates arrested and four mother ships seized in three days off Somalia
