"Zawisza Czarny" is the second training vessel of that name; the first was a wooden schooner built in 1902. This is a steel 3-masted schooner built in Gdansk in 1952. The double mainsail booms, one on either side of the sail, give rise to the name 'wishbone schooner'.
140'x22'x14' she was originally a fishing boat, but she was converted as a training ship for Merchant Marine officers. Today she provides sail experience for Polish Scouts.
She has taken part in many Tall Ship Races; in 1984 she rescued 9 of the crew of the "Marques" which sank off Bermuda with the loss of 19 lives.
In 1994 she went aground in the St Lawrence seaway. She developed a severe list but no damage was done. She was refloated by 2 tugs some 48 hours later - much to the embarrassment of her 6 crew and 30 trainees.
