VASCO DA GAMA
Launched 15th December 1792, Length 182ft. Beam 44ft. Draught 38ft. Armed with Eighty 24pdr guns. Believed to have been a large ship, bigger than an English 74 of the time. VASCO DA GAMMA fought with the British Navy against the French and also assisted in the blockade of Malta and Naples.
When the royal family fled to Brazil in 1807 VASCO DA GAMA was left at Lisbon as unseaworthy. Her guns were removed and remounted on the MARTIM DE FREITAS. She fell into French hands when General Junot entered Lisbon on 30'" November 1807. Returned under Portuguese control when Junot was defeated the following year. After an extensive refit in 1810 she was made flagship of the Portuguese fleet.
In1816 she went to Brazil as flagship of the expedition to the River Plate during the war in Uruguay. Some time before 1820 she became a prison ship in Rio de Janeiro. In 1820 she was used as an accommodation ship for new recruits until January 1827, she then become a hospital ship. After the war with Argentina she was reduced to a hulk. The uniform is of a Midshipman of 1782.
