WA-RIRIK canoe

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Apr 18, 2012 9:01 pm

WA-RIRIK; a small outrigger canoe used in the Kiribati, and used for transportation, and fishing outside the reefs in Kiribati.
Plank-built with sewn strakes. Sharp ends; asymmetric in cross section, the flattened side opposite the outrigger. Two piece frames sewn in approximately every 50 cm.
Narrow curved keel. Three booms, counter sunk in the washstrakes, extended to the short stout float.
1 – 2 spars cross from each end of the hull to the central boom; light sticks lashed across the booms provided further bracing. Forked connectives attach booms to the float (the float is not visible on the stamp, which must be looking to the sail on the port side of the canoe.)
Steered with an oar that rest against a prong on the lee side, one at each end of the canoe.
Mast can be stepped amidships at several points along the length of the canoe.
Large triangular sail; boomed at the foot, tacked with the apex down to the forward end. Original made of pandanus leaves, now of nylon.
Can be also paddled or poled.
Reported lengths 4.6 – 7.4m. e.g. length 7.4m, beam 0.53m, depth 0.59m.

In the margin of the miniature sheet two racing canoes are shown.

Kiribati 1938 1½d sg45, scott?. 1996 $1.50 sgMS522, scott686.
