SAMSON tug 1888

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Oct 27, 2012 8:27 pm

The tug depict on this stamp near the ORAVIA is the steam tug SAMSON, the name is on the stern.

Built as a tug by Earls Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd, Hull.
Most probably launched as the SAMSON.
Tonnage 96 gross, dim. 28.7 x 5.2m
Powered by a triple expansion 3 cyl. steam engine
1888 Completed. (Her first owner I could not find.)

20 July 1900 she arrived in Port Stanley owned then by The Falkland Island Trading Co., London.
She was brought to the Falklands after many ship-masters complained that when there had been a powerful tug in the Falklands many lives and ships could have been saved before the ships ended up on the treacherous coast near Port Stanley.
Four year before the American full rigger CITY OF PHILADELPHIA was lost with all hands on the treacherous Billy Rock near the entrance of the outer harbour of Port Stanley.
At that time the steam launch SISSIE was the most powerful ship in the port and she stood helplessly by, and could not save the men from the rigging of the wreck due to bad weather and high seas.
24 September 1910 she towed in at Port Stanley the British full rigged ship WAVERTREE, which was dismasted off Cape Horn.
1912 When the ORAVIA went up on the Billy Rock she together with other ships rescued the crew and passengers.
1945 She broke her moorings during a gale en drifted on the coast just west of Whalebone Cove, where she still sits on the beach today.
