Post by Anatol » Tue Nov 27, 2012 4:47 pm

Cargo lighter of the Ganges Delta area; transported jute, timber, coal, stone. Participated in river naval operations in the mid-nth century. Low, blunt bluff bow; elevated stern; sides parallel for most of length. Small cabin at stern; waist open or covered with thatching; high cargoes contained by a bamboo framework along the sides. Helmsman worked from a platform, manning a huge triangular balanced rudder at the port quarter; rotated around a vertical axis by a tiller. Rowed from atop the cargo using long sweeps with small round blades. Set a large square mainsail and sometimes a topsail to a mast of 2 pieces spliced together. Often tracked upstream from shore by a rope to the masthead. Length-to-beam ratio 3:1; cap. 20-100t.
