Warka-moowee (Sri Lanka)

Post by Anatol » Thu Nov 29, 2012 5:37 pm

Plank-extended dugout canoe with a single outrigger. Fishing craft, but they were often found well offshore carrying fresh produce to ships rounding the southern coast.
Bottom flattened; top third of canoe* created by vertical and parallel planks, sewn on and caulked with coir. Ends strongly raked. Two booms, one crossing the hull amidships and the other halfway to the end, curved downward to connect directly with ¬the cigar-shaped float. Outrigger kept to windward with either end serving as the bow. Steered by means of a board, one available at each end, that worked like a centerboard. Trapezoidal sail hung from to bamboo masts. The primary mast was supported by a rope loop from the midships outrigger boom and stayed to one end and to the outer end of the main boom. The secondary mast formed a "V" and was lashed to the inside of the hull adjacent to the primary mast. Crew of 5. Reported lengths 5.5- 14m width of ca. 0.6m and depth of ca. 0.7m fairly constant.

In the photo from the magazine "Around the World" No. 7; 1979 is a good illustration of the outrigger device of a "warka-moowee" fishing boat from the small town of Negombo, on the west coast of Ceylon.
