Trader of southwestern Madura and the Java coast to the west: also serves as a carrier for the larval milkfish that are paced in local fishponds. Important as a bulk carrier, especially for salt, and now timber on the larger vessels.Extant,but relatively few now being built. Solid, plank-built vessel; closely spaced frames inserted later;massive beam ends projected through the sides, now seen only on the smaller boats. Flaring sides; strong sheer.Bottom curves fore-and-aft; keel extends ram-like beyond the bow and stern. Raked, wedge-shaped transoms at each end,the bow quite tall; both transoms
еlaborately carved and painted. Large ones decked, small ones undecked; most of hold area protected by a low,peaked- roof deckhouse. Employs 2 massive quarter rudders lashed against a crossbeam and worked against a heavy . H-shaped support on the after deck. Two short masts stepped forward of the deckhouse. Support triangular sails. apexes down. Yards at top and bottom; bamboo spar from the deck braces outer end of the upper yard at the proper angle; yards also stayed from a boom set out over each side. Ring on the end of the upper yard of the smaller foresail runs over the bowsprit as the tack.A 3rd temporary sail may be raised from the deckhouse.Poled in narrow waterways. Crew of 6-7 on a large vessel, 3 on the smaller. Average length ca. 15m;length of a large janggolan 20m, beam 7m, hold depth 2.3m.
