Fregat the Kaiser Leopold

The Leopoldus Primus was in the late 17th Century, the first convoy ship the free city of Hamburg. It was designed for use against pirates on trade routes to Spain, Portugal and West Africa and to the accompaniment vonWalfängern built to Greenland and was named after I. Holy Roman Emperor Leopold. It was put into service in 1668 and scrapped after 34 major rides 1705th She was probably identical with the better-known Wapen of Hamburg (I), which was placed in service a short time later.
Hamburg won by a decline during the 16th Hanse Century compared to the leading in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck increasingly important.
Hamburg had trade relations that ranged from Arkhangelsk in Russia to the Mediterranean ports in the south.
The rides, however, promised not only highly profitable, but also brought a variety of dangers. Especially in the Mediterranean merchant shipping was threatened by pirates. Here primarily of the corsairs acted under Ottoman suzerainty Barbary States Algiers, Tripoli and Tunis. The Barbary pirates captured many merchant ships and its cargo and the crew took as slaves, which they sold in the markets of the western Mediterranean. The Corsairs extended their raids in a few cases from even to the Elbe estuary. Ships from Hamburg were particularly vulnerable as the hamburger - unlike the great maritime powers - possessed no adequate military protection.
Already 23 September the Council of Hamburg invited the citizens, two frigates to be built.
Still in the keel laying the wood work was completed, and in February 1668 they started with the equipment of the vessel. In September 1668, the Leopoldus Primus was operational, and this was communicated to the Council.
Under its first captain M. Dreyer Leopoldus went on its maiden voyage.
About the size and appearance, as well as on her sister ship, the Wapen of Hamburg, are very few and little productive documents.
The Leopoldus Primus had three masts, with the foremast foresail, fore top sail, fore topgallant sail, the main mast with mainsail, topsail and main topgallant sail and the mizzen mast and mizzen sail with a cross. Furthermore, they had a bowsprit with several smaller sails. The sail should have probably had a color from gray to pale ocher. White is to be excluded, however.
The most important piece of equipment for use as a convoy ship were the guns. The Leopoldus had a total of 54 guns. The heaviest caliber were usually on the lower gun deck, the lighter on the top and back and back deck. For the sister ship Leopoldus Primus, the Wapen of Hamburg, the following division of the caliber was reconstructed, which would apply in a similar way to the Leopoldus Primus.

The successful use of Leopoldus Primus is supported by numerous reports. So in the late fall of 1673 Captain Berent Jakobsen Karpfanger won with the Leopoldus Primus on rDogger bank a battle against French privateers, as they have a Primus Leopoldus of the convoy, which came from Portugal, attacked. A year later came Karpfanger of Cape St. Vincentauf three Turkish pirate ships who dropped out but the fight prematurely.
Highlight the links among the Leopoldus Primus Karpfanger the defense of five French Kaperfregatten in the Elbe estuary was on 11 September 1678th. The French frigates had it in for a 50-strong convoy of ships whalers, who were from Greenland on the way home to Hamburg .For all thet after a twelve-hour battle sunk two French frigates, and the rest put to flight. Hamburger on hand, there was no loss of ships, which Leopoldus Primus itself was only slightly damaged. Only two of the crew were killed and the Leopoldus man was injured. According to legend, the captain of Hamburg received Leopoldus with a triumph and the Council should Karpfanger have presented a financial gift of 300 thalers.
In 1681 was the Leopoldus Primus involved in Karpfanger in the rescue of the Spanish silver fleet from attack by Turkish ships and in August 1686 contributed to Leopoldus Primus important services in the defense of the city against Denmark under Christian V. A Council gave the Admiralty while the right to use its discretion Leopoldus Primus. Without such action, and the intervention of Brandenburg and hannoveranischer ships the independence of the city would probably have been stopped by a Danish occupation. 1693, the Primus Leopoldus off Cape St. Vincent was again attacked, this time by French Kaper. It lost almost all hamburgischen ships in the convoy.
In 1702, the Primus was Leopoldus the oldest of the three then existing hamburgischen convoy ships, they came on a convoy drive west in a heavy storm and was badly damaged. Captain Schroeder had to turn back and make for Falmouth in England as a port of refuge. After a tour of the room were the people Leopoldus Primus for a repair not worth it.
After 36 years of the career of the first convoy ship of Hamburg was terminated. Since that is handed down from the Leopoldus Primus nothing. It seems in 1705 to have been probably broken up in Hamburg.
