Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Mar 01, 2013 7:28 pm

Built as 6th Rate ship by John Reed in Hull for the Royal Navy.
31 December 1741 ordered.
29 March 1742 keel laid down.
18 March 1743 launched as HMS ALDERNEY, the intention was to name her SQUIRREL but before launching altered. 15 sisterships.
Tonnage 498 ton, (bm) dim. 112.0 x 32.0 x 11.1ft, length of keel 91.6ft.
Armament: Upper deck 20 – 9 pdrs, in 1745 added on lower deck 2 – 9 pdrs. and on quarter deck 2 – 3 pdrs.
Crew 140-160.
05 June 1743 completed by builders.

February 1742 commissioned.
After completing used for patrolling.
1748 Under command of Captain Peter Toms off Lisbon.
26 June 1749 sold for £356 to George Heyliger a merchant from London.

25 May 1750 (other source gives 23 June) she sailed from Gravesend under command of Captain Pendoch Neal with on board 360 settlers for the new colony what is now called Nova Scotia..
06 July due to contrary winds she made a call at Plymouth on 17 July, where 7 German emigrants were transferred to the ANNE which was also underway from Rotterdam to Halifax, and the ALDERNEY took on board fresh provision.
03 September 1750 arrived in Halifax harbour and embarked her passengers on the east side of the harbour what is now known as Dartmouth.
05 September the charter of the ALDERNEY ended and most probably she returned to the U.K.
Till so far not found what her fate was, the suggestion given in some web-sites that she was again commissioned in the Royal Navy is not true.
1757 There was an other ship under that name in the Royal Navy but she was a new vessel.

Alderney 1990 20p sgA43, scott56.
