ALDERNEY HMS 1738

Built as a sloop by the master shipwright John Haward at the Woolwich Dry-dock.
23 March 1734 ordered.
01 April 1734 keel laid down.
29 March 1735 launched as the HMS ALDERNEY one of the Salamander class.
Tonnage 263 ton (bm), dim. 90.6 x 26.0 x 11.0ft, length of keel 73.9ft.
Armament: 10 – 6pdrs. 14 - ½pdr. swivels as sloop, as bomb 6 guns and 8 swivels .and 2 – 12 inch mortars
Crew 100 as sloop, 60 as bomb.
May 1737completed.
17 June 1737 completed as a sloop.

1737 After completing under command of Commander Temple West and sailing for Newfoundland.
From July until August 1738 fitted out as a bomb vessel at Woolwich.
09 August 1738 under command of Commander James Scott sailed from Woolwich and accompanied by HMS SALAMANDER she arrived at Spithead on 14 September.
Trials were carried out and the mortars fired, during the firing of the mortars, the ship got some damage, and both ships sailed to Portsmouth for repairs. After a survey it was recommended that her bulkheads should be strengthened.
She returned to Woolwich on 11 December and was paid off at 13 December 1738.
From May until September 1739 under repair at Woolwich.
After repair recommissioned and joined Vernon’s fleet January 1740 bound for the West Indies.
25 February 1740 she sailed with Vernon’s fleet from Jamaica to bombard Cartagena. 3 March at anchor fore the town, and on 6 March the bomb vessels opened fire on the town, without doing much damage.
23 March 1740 took part in the attack on the Fortress of San Lorenzo el Real Chagres which surrendered after two days.
1741 Under command of Commander Henry Ward
30 June 1741 under command of Commander Arthur Forrest sailed from Jamaica with Vernon’s fleet for a attack on Santiago de Cuba which was abandoned when the troops at shore not could made any progress trough the thickly wooden country and sickness under the landing troops, and the town not could be captured from the sea. After the landing troops were again embarked the fleet left for Jamaica.
February 1742 after condemned by a survey was converted in a hulk and used to careen ships.
Final disposal unknown.
