Built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard No P6 by Chantiers & Ateliers de St. Nazaire (Penhoet) at St Nazaire for Compagnie de Navigation Sud Atlantitique, Bordeaux, France.
28 November 1928 keel laid down.
15 April 1930 launched as the L’ATLANTIQUE.
Tonnage 42,512 grt, dim. 223 x 28 x 8.8m. (draught).
Powered by 4 sets of single reduction geared steam turbines, 54,000 shp, four shafts, speed 21 knots.
Three funnels of which the third was a dummy.
Passenger accommodation for 414 first class 158 second and 585 third class. Crew 663.
September 1931 completed.

She was built for the liner service between France and South America.
29 September 1931 she left for her maiden voyage from Bordeaux via Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo to Buenos Aires.
03 January 1933 she sailed from Bordeaux to Le Havre under command of Captain Rene Schoofs without passengers and a crew of 200 men, for dry-docking, she caught fire the next day in a position of about 25 mile from the Island of Guernsey, which not could be contained.
The fire had started in a first class stateroom at around 03.30 in the morning, and spread rapidly, when the captain ordered the crew to abandon the ship.
17 Men of the crew perished in the blaze, the other crew members were mostly rescued by the Dutch KNSM cargo vessel ACHILLES9 (1,822 grt) built in 1906.
After 2½ days crew members of a French tug managed to board her where after towlines were connected on 06 January and she was towed stern first to Cherbourg by four French tugs
07 January berthed at Cherbourg. The fire was there extinguished on 08 January where she later was declared beyond repair.
February 1936 was she sold for scrap, towed to the port of Glasgow where she was scrapped by the firm of Smith & Houston.
