The real homes of the jalbaut are Bahrain and the Gulfs Saudi coast. It differs from most other Arab dhows, having an upright stem and transom stern, transom stern raked ca. 45°; and the hull, Carvel-planked, originally sewn;whether open or decked, is not one that can be admired; flat sheer; straight keel; flat floors. *, The vessel is called quadrilateral lateen-type sail with a short luff bowsprit; early boats had mat sails. And looks are not improved with the flying poop erection that is very much like the crude wooden bench on which the shore-going male, during his moments of leisure, finds so much pleasure with the hookah.
The jalbauf s name is thought to have come from the Port-uguese gelba but it might also be a derivation of the Hindi jal (net) hence jal-baut (net or fishing boat). Used widely for pearling and carrying passengers and cargo, and some of the smaller ones are ship's boats. When an auxiliary engine, called a lanch. Crew of 4-6, lengths 6-30m, beamy; shallow draft.
