Built as a semi-submersible drilling unit by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd., Shanghai for China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China.
18 October 2007 contract signed.
28 April 2008 first steel cut.
20 April 2009 laid down.
26 April 2010 launched as the HAI YANG SHI YOU 981.
Tonnage 34,483 grt. Operation displacement 51,624m. Dim. length and beam of deck 77.47 x 74.42m. Her pontoons have a length of 114.07m, with a beam of 20.12m. Transit draught 8.2m, operation draught 19 m.
Powered by 8 diesel engines each 5,564hp (4,300 Kw) thrusters. For electric and power for other equipment 8 diesel engines each 7.155 hp. (5.530 Kw).
Bunker capacity 4,603 m³
Accommodation for 140 persons.
Operating in a water depth of 3,050m. Drilling depth 10,000m.
2011 Completed.

The drilling unit is capable of drilling as a dynamically positioned (DPS3) drilling unit, for operations in moderate environments, and conventionally moored in water depth up to 1,500m.
2013 In operation in South China Sea. Imo No. 9480344.
