EARL OF CHESTERFIELD cutter

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu May 30, 2013 8:48 pm

When a mail service was opened in 1794 between Weymouth and the Channel Islands, the cutter EARL OF CHESTERFIELD opened this service.
She was built after the specification of the British Post Office in Bridport, Dorset, around 1794.
Launched as the EARL OF CHESTERFIELD, named after the Earl of Chesterfield who with the Earl of Leicester was joint Postmaster General from 1794-1798.
Built of oak, tonnage 78 tons, dim. 17.07 x 3.66m.

She was manned by the Royal Navy crew and opened the service in June 1795 between Weymouth and the Channel Islands together with the packet ROVER.
Sailing every other Saturday from Weymouth.
After 11 years in the service during the Napoleonic wars was she sold, fate unknown.
