A tanker is a special ship designed to carry bulk liquids, now important for petroleum products. Some built to transport liquid chemicals and liquefied natural gas; a small type transport wine or molasses.
The bitumen carrier has heating coils around the holds to keep the cargo liquid. A parcel tanker is constructed to carry several grades of liquid cargo, including chemicals and refined oil products. Generally long and low with a raised forecastle, bridge and accommodation amidships but nowadays always aft, also the engine room.
Cargo loaded by gravity and discharged by the ship’s pumps.
Transverse and longitudinal bulkheads compartmentalize the ship. Nowadays double hulled built.
Length circa 475 metres.
