Built as one of Project 10621 of the Vitus Bering type Antarctic supply and research vessels under yard No 6002 by the Khersonskyi SZ, Kherson, (now Ukrainian) for Russian account.
20 December 1989 keel laid down.
06 September 1991 launched as the ALEKSANDR SLEDZUK. The lead ship of the class was the IVAN PAPANIN
Tonnage 14,184 grt, 10,500 dwt, displacement 21,000 ton. Dim. 166.4 x 22.9 x 13.5m, length bpp147.1m
Powered by 1 Bryansk B&W 8DKRN 60/195-10 diesel engine, 13,200 kW, speed 16.7 knots.
Four cargo holds, can carry 325 TEU’s including 20 reefer containers.
Ice strengthened. Icebreaking capability of 1 metre ice by a speed of 1.5 knots.
Crew 43, and 128 passengers or researchers
03 April 1992 completed. Homeport Kaliningrad.
30 November 1991 delivered as the YUVENT to the Russian Government.

After 12 months of service for the Russian Government was she sold on 26 February 1993 by the South African Navy as a replacement for the replenishment vessel SAS TAFELBERG.
08 June 1993 commissioned in the South African Navy as the SAS OUTENIQUA (A302).
Crew 126,
Refitted in a ro-ro replenishment ship, received a flight deck and hangar for a helicopter and replenishment at sea equipment and fitted out with light armament when needed as combat support vessel.
During her service for the South African Navy she took part in many local and international military exercises.
1997 As a platform for peace talks between the warring factions in Zaire.
1993 She delivered the world’s largest mobile hospital and emergency supplies to Trieste, Italy for the victims of war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In the later half of the 1990s she transported personnel and material for the rebuilding of the SANAE IV base in Antarctica.
30 July 2004 decommissioned.
2004 Sold to Mertech Marine (Pty) Ltd. St Vincent and Grenadines, with homeport Kingston, renamed in PAARDEBERG, named after the Battle of Paardenberg in de Boer War in South Africa, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Paardeberg
She was employed for the 25th Indian Antarctic research voyage in 2005-2006.
2006 Was she sold to Silters Co. Ltd., Aberdeen, U.K. and renamed ICE MAIDEN I, under Cyprus registration.
She was sailing to the Atlantic Marine Shipyard in Mobile, Alabama USA for refitting in an offshore motel for the oil industry, but after her superstructure was removed work halted, then transported on board the heavy lift vessel FJORD from Pascagoula, Miss. to Rotterdam, and from there to River Tyne
The intention was to refit her in an offshore flotel with platform maintenance facilities, with accommodation for 399 persons.
But before work started the company got broke and the ICE MAIDEN I was laid up in Abeon the River Tyne.
2013 Still laid up with rumors that the empty hull will be sold for scrap. IMO No 9056894.

From Mr. Peter Crichton I got the following update:ICE MAIDEN 1
"The ICE MAIDEN 1 arrived on the River Tyne - North East England - some time before the 27th July 2008 and has been there ever since. She is now berthed at the quayside of the former Swan Hunter Shipbuilders at Wallsend. The Swan Hunter slipways and dry-docks are now being developed into a business park".

She is now owned by the Tyne side based recycling group G.O. Brien Ltd.

Marine News February 2014 page 113 gives: sold by Silters Co. Ltd (C&M Group), United Kingdom, to British breakers and work commenced on 20 October 2013.
