FALCON 1587

Post by john sefton » Wed Oct 02, 2013 3:42 pm

FALCON. Galleon. A surprise choice of ship, one of a fleet of 7 ships lead by Humphrey Gilbert.
In 1587 he sailed to discover any land not already claimed by any Christian Prince. The FALCON, a Royal ship was commanded by Walter Raleigh with Simon Fernandez as Master. The fleet returned home four months later without achieving much.
The date on the stamp is again 1584 when two small barks were sent by Walter Raleigh to north America. The ship depicted is a pre race type ship and would more likely be the ROEBUCK which was sent with colonists in 1585 - Nicaragua 1973. 10c. SG1849 (J Duhaut)
