GREAT WESTERN

Built in 1867 by W. Simons & Co., Renfrew, for Ford & Jackson.
Paddle steamer Gt:447, Nt:281, L:67,22m. B:7,69m. draft:3,78m. 2 cyl. Steam engine:190 hp. Service Milford – Ireland. In 1890 transfered to Preston & West Coast Steamship Co. Ltd. sevice Preston Quay – Douglas (Isle of Man) 1891 sold to David MacBrayne, renamed in LOVERDALE, scrapped in 1904.

Built as an iron-hulled, side-paddle passenger steamer under yard No 124 by W. Simons & Co., Renfrew, Scotland for Ford & Jackson, Milford.
09 March 1864 launched under the name GREAT WESTERN, most probably named by the owners who did have a close association with the Great Western Railway.
Tonnage 454 grt, 207 net. Dim. 67.18 x 7.68 x 3.78m.
Powered by a 2-cyl compound oscillating steam-engine, manufactured by builder, 190 nhp., speed 10 knots.
1867 Completed. (long time between launching and completing)

After delivery used in the service between Milford and Cork.
01 February 1872 taken over by the Great Western Railway.
1878 Transferred by the company to the Weymouth to Cherbourg route, made also calls at the Channel Islands.
1885 Service ceased and returned to the Milford- Waterford-Cork route.
1887 Was she chartered Weymouth & Channel Island S.P. Co., after this company had lost the BRIGHTON in January that year.
30 May 1890 Sold to Nathaniel Miller at Preston for £2.750, for the Preston to Dublin service.
1891 Acquired by David MacBrayne, Glasgow for the Strome Ferry-Stornoway mail service, not renamed.
1893 Reboilered, thereafter she carried only one funnel, renamed LOVEDALE.
1897 Transferred to the Kyle of Lochalsh-Stornoway service after Kyle became the new railway terminus.
1900 Used in the service between Kyle of Lochalsh and Portree.
1903 Glasgow to Islay service till she was replaced by GLENDALE, thereafter laid up.
1904 Scrapped

She ended her career freighting sheep from Islay to Glasgow, and her master, Lachlan McTavish was convicted at Glasgow Central Police Court with causing unnecessary suffering to the sheep. She was licensed for 750 sheep but was carrying 1170 aboard. Three sheep were suffocated.
In 1904 she was towed into Port Ellen with a broken crankshaft and was scrapped.
