Her original name “Diez Y Ocho De Julio” meaning to commemorate the date of the adoption of Uruguay’s first constitution. Built in Leith Shipyard in Scotland in 1879.

Tonnage 678 tons (after conversion 764 tons), 194'pp x 26' x 15' 6", Compaund, vertical 600 ihp, Speed; 12 knots. Armament; 2 x 47 mm, Iron hull ship. Complement; 85.

Built as the yacht Lady Nell later named as Normandy. Bought by the Uruguayan Navy in 1907 as a training ship and Presidential Yacht. Later she was used as a river gunboat. She later became headquarters for the Salto Rowing Club.

Re fitted in 1917 as school ship, barque rigged.
