For the 100th anniversary of the Hurtigruten service, the Norway Post issued in 1993 two stamps which shows us an old and modern vessel which were or are used in this service.

KONG HARALD (call sign LGIY) is a Hurtigruten ship owned by Hurtigruten AS , and was handed over to Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap (TFDS) in June 1993. The ship was yard number 101 at Volkswerft GmbH in Stralsund, Germany, and the contract price was NOK 320 million. MS "KONG HARALD" is a sister ship to MS NORDLYS and MS RICHARD WITH , and was the first of the new generation of Hurtigruten ships. The ship has been in constant rotation in the Hurtigruten since July 1993.

History
In June 1990, the Storting decided to make NOK 1.875 billion available to convert the Hurtigruten to commercial operation. The companies were thus able to start designing new ships, and Skipskonsult AS in Bergen prepared a project that was sent out to around 30 shipyards around the world. Of the construction proposals, six stood out, but in the end, it was the proposal from the German Meyer shipyard in Papenburg which was selected. The yard is one of the world's leading cruise shipyards, and the cabin solution in the proposal meant that 212 of the 230 cabins were located outside. The construction contract and options for two sister ships went to Volkswerft GmbH in Stralsund, Germany, which, due to restructuring funds for the shipbuilding industry in former East Germany, had the lowest bid.
On November 28, 1992, the ship was launched. On June 25, 1993, she was handed over and christened "KONG HARALD" by Hjørdis Opseth, Minister of Transport Kjell Opseth's wife. On 2 July 1993, the ship was in Trondheim during the celebration of Hurtigruten's 100th anniversary. The MS "KONG HARALD" set out from Bergen on its first round trip on the Hurtigruten on July 6, 1993, and replaced the old MS POLARLYS from 1952. The ship set a new standard in terms of passenger comfort and interior and ushered in a new era in the Hurtigruten's history.
In 1995, the ship was docked in Bremerhaven, Germany, to have warranty work performed, and at the same time, a submersible azimuth thruster was fitted to the stern.
In March 2006, Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskab merged with Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab (OVDS) and formed Hurtigruten Group, later renamed Hurtigruten AS.
MS KONG HARALD got a new funnel logo, but kept her home port and the name.
On 4 March 2013, she grounded just outside the mouth of the Trollfjord in Hadsel. The ship suffered minor damage on the bulb. The ship was repaired at the Fiskerstrand shipyard in Ålesund.
In the winter of 2016 , the interior of "KONG HARALD" was refurbished in a modern and Arctic style, which led to many enthusiasts’ comments.
The ship
MS KONG HARALD's tonnage is 11,204 gross registered tonnes, 4,153 net registered tonnes, and the load capacity is 902 deadweight tonnes. The ship has 3 refrigerators/freezers with a total volume of 880 m³ and cargo space of 1,500 m³. The car deck is 600 m² and has room for 45 cars. Loading and unloading take place with a forklift through a large side door with a 5-ton pallet lift on the port side. The main engines are two six-cylinder four-stroke Krupp MaK DM 6 M552 C diesel engines, each running its own propeller. Stated performance is 12,228 horsepower in total, giving a top speed of 20 knots. The ship is equipped with 2 Brunvollside bow-propellers in the bow, each with an output of 1,075 horsepower. In connection with warranty work in 1995, a submersible 1,200 horsepower Ulstein azimuth- thruster was mounted aft.
MS KONG HARALD is the first Hurtigruten ship to be equipped with active stabilizer fins. The power supply is provided by two shaft generators of 2,875 kVA, 2 auxiliary motors of 1,500 kVA, and an emergency power generator of 265 kVA.
MS KONG HARALD is certified for 691 passengers in coastal shipping and has 490 berths in 230 cabins. The common areas are large and include a bar, viewing lounge, cafeteria, dining room, and conference room. The gangway is integrated into the passenger port and is folded in and out using a hydraulics system.

2021 Still in the Hurtigruten service. Same name and owners.
