Post by Arturo » Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:23 pm

Francis Drake is a 72 feet ketch launched in 1976 to sail in the North West waters of Britain and skippered by Fred Dovaston. She was named after Sir Francis Drake, English sea captain and Vice Admiral.

also see Topic: “Golden Hind (Drake)”

She was used to give young people 12-24 years old the oppotunity to go to sea under sail. In the Isle of Man, the Francis Drake Bursary Fund raises funds to send youngsters for a week’s sailing aboard Francis Drake. The ketch is usually chartered by the Bursary Fund for three weeks per year for this purpose.

On the stamp, she is depicted nearing Calf of Man.

In 1977 Francis Drake in Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee year sailed with a message of goodwill from the youth of Britain to the youth of Iceland.

In 1979 Francis Drake sailed to Iceland for a three week expedition.

In 1992 Francis Drake took part in the Grand Regetta Colombus Tall Ship Race to celebrate the quincentenary of the discovery of the Americas by Colombus.

Francis Drake worked as a training vessel for youngsters from 1976 until 1997 and most probably retired in 1997.
