The German stamp commemorates the 275th anniversary of the beginning of construction of the inland port at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr Rivers. Two cargo ships are represented on the stamp. They are imaginery ships and no need to be identified.

The port was initially built to facilitate the shipment of coal. Railroad lines to the harbor began in 1848. The northern and southern harbors were developed in 1860, Kaiser harbor in 1872, and three basins before 1908. In November 1990, the port of Duisberg began operating as the world’s first landlocked free port, 140 miles away from the sea.

The Rhine-Ruhr port is an inland port in Mülheim on the lower part of the Ruhr. The port is located in the district of Speldorf about 8 km upstream of the mouth of the Rhine and Ruhr.

The inland port, which is maintained by the establishment of Mülheim, consists of two parts. The northern port is located on the navigation channel from which branches off the south port as the port basin. The water depth is at normal water level at least 2.80 m and the length of the quays and terminals is 3.1 km.

The Rhine-Ruhr port has about 220 square km total area and is the largest industrial area in Mülheims. Inside the industrial area nearly 360 companies are located, employing over 6,000 people. About 1.6 million tonnes handled and transported annually in the harbor. Transportation within the port are performed by a port railway which operates on approximately 27 kilometers of track. There are handled mainly scrap iron, steel and mineral oil.

After the Ruhr shipping came to a complete end of the 19th century with the advent of railways and especially by the construction of Ruhrtalbahn to a halt, the city of Mülheim decided at the Ruhr in 1913 to increase the economic power to create a port and a direct connection to the port of Duisburg to accomplish. For this purpose, the Ruhr Ship Canal was built in twelve years of construction and the slope of around ten meters between the cities covered by two new locks. On 8 October 1927, the Rhine-Ruhr port was officially inaugurated.

Since September 2004, the Rhine-Ruhr port is the starting point of the EU project Inter ports, with the strengthened cooperation between the inland and the relocation of the transport traffic to be achieved on ship and rail.
