Battle of Leyte Gulf 1944

Post by john sefton » Mon Aug 31, 2015 2:21 pm

LEYTE GULF. A naval action fought on 23-26 October 1944, during WW2, between the main fleet of Japan and the Third and Seventh Fleets of the U.S.A. In terms of size of the opposing forces and the area over which the battle ranged, it was the biggest naval battle in history. In the battle the Japanese lost three battleships, four aircraft carriers, six heavy and four light cruisers and nine destroyers against American losses of one light carrier, two escort carriers, two destroyers and one destroyer escort. Furthermore nearly every major Japanese unit was damaged some seriously. From that time the Japanese Navy was reduced to an auxiliary role in the war. - Grenadines of St Vincent 1990. $6. SG666
