Armenian released two stamps in 2015 for the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide. One stamp depict a warship and the inscription “1915 Mount Musa Resistance”
My Russian contact gives that the French cruiser GUICHEN is depict, but she has only four funnels, and she can’t be the warship depict which has seven funnels, comparing photos of French warships of that time with the stamp Mr. Peter Crichton confirms that the French cruiser JEANNE D’ARC is shown on the stamp, she took also part in the evacuation of the Armenian people from Mount Musa.
September 12 1915, Musadag,The efforts to deport the Armenian population around Antioch [Antakya] did not begin until late July. By this time, word of the treatment of Armenians before and during the deportation process had begun to spread. A Protestant minister who had been working in Zeitun, the site of one of the first deportations, had returned to the area around the mountain Musadagh and warned his compatriots of what awaited them if they agreed to be deported. Some still believed it was “folly” to resist the Turks, and were marched out to die in Der Zor in the Syrian dessert. Most, however, decided to retreat to the mountain Musadag with their families and fight the Turks there. Around 1000 men, with only about 500 rifles between them, defended 3000 women and children on the mountain from a force of perhaps 15,000 Turks.
They were able to hold out for multiple weeks while suffering multiple assaults, even managing to successfully raid the Turks on one occasion. However, it was clear they could not hold out indefinitely. However, they were within sight of the Allied-dominated Mediterranean, which inspired a new tactic. They made two huge white flags, one bearing a red cross and the other reading “Christians in distress: rescue.” On September 10, the tactic paid off when the French cruiser GUICHEN spotted the flags. The Armenians met with the French and convinced them to evacuate the entire group. Three other cruisers quickly arrived, and by September 12 the evacuation of the over 4000 Armenians was complete. The French brought them to Port Said and safety two days later. http://today-in-wwi.tumblr.com/post/128 ... m-musadagh
