Built as a passenger-cargo ship under yard No 496 by W.G. Armstrong Mitchell. Low Walker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne for the Hamburg Südamerikaniske Dampfschiffahrts Gesellschaft (Hamburg South American Line), Hamburg.
28 August 1886 launched as the TIJUCA.
Tonnage 2,129 gross, 1,372 net, dim. 94.18 x 11.13 x 7.21m.
Powered by one triple expansion steam engine manufactured by Wallsend Slipway & Engineering Co., Wallsend, 265 nhp (1,400 ihp), one shaft, speed 11 knots.
Accommodation for 40 first class 280 steerage, crew 47.
16 October 1886 delivered to owner, homeport Hamburg.
05 November 1886 sailed for her maiden voyage from Hamburg to Brazil in the liner service from Germany to Brazil.
1896 Sold to Hamburg America Line, renamed VALDIVIA and put in the Hamburg to West Indies service. She was given a white hull and yellow funnel.
Early 1898 fitted out for the First German Deep-sea Expedition, sailed from Hamburg on 31 July 1898, the expedition lasted till 01 May 1899. During this expedition she visited St Pauls and Amsterdam and the Kerguelen Islands in the Antarctic. For the expedition was she square rigged on the foremast to assist the ship moving when ice entangled the propeller.
During the summer of 1900 used as a transport and troopship for the Boxer Rebellion in China.
From 1902 used in the Atlas Line between New York and the West Indies.
13 February 1907 on a voyage from Kingston, Jamaica to New York a steam boiler exploded, which cost seven lives. The VALDIVIA was badly damaged and had to be towed to New York for repair.
24 July 1908 sold to P.R.Hinsch and renamed in TOM G. CORPI, with homeport Hamburg.
1909 Sold to Soc. Generale de Transports Maritimes a Vapeur, Marseilles and renamed FLANDRE.
From 1914 in a regular service from Marseille to Algeria, made calls at Philippeville, Bougie and Mostaganem. At that time she could carry 34 passengers.
January 1927 arrived at La Seyne for scrapping.
