Built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard No 521 by Newport News Sb. & D.D. Co. Newport News ,Virginia for Grace Line Inc., New York.
28 August 1957 launched as the SANTA ROSA one sister the SANTA PAULA.
Tonnage 15,371 grt, 8,713 dwt, dim. 177.88 x 25.58 x 8.60m., length bpp. 164.4m.
Powered by two General Electric steam turbines, 16,400 kW, twin shafts, speed 20 knots.
Accommodation for 300 first class passengers.
Cargo capacity: 337,000 cubic feet general and 81,000 cubic feet reefer space.
Crew 246.
12 June 1958 delivered to owners.

26 June 1958 she sailed for her maiden voyage from New York to Central America.
26 March 1958 collided with the American tanker VALCHEM off Atlantic City.
1969 Sold to Prudential Grace Lines Inc., New York not renamed.
22 January 1971 laid up at Hampton Roads.
1974 Transferred to the USA Government.
1976 Sold to Vintero Corp., New York not renamed, she was moved to Baltimore and laid up again.
1989 Sold to Coral Cruise Line (Lelakis) and on 19 December 1989 towed from Baltimore to Chalkis in Greece by the ZAMTUG IV.
From March 1990 till 1992 refitted in a cruise vessel at Chalkis.
Tonnage increased to 24,851 grt.
Accommodation for 960 passengers.
Operated by Rainbow Cruises.
1990 Sold to Jo-Dim Investment Trust SA, Nassau, Bahamas and renamed DIAMOND ISLAND.
1992 Renamed in REGENT RAINBOW made cruises from Tampa USA.
27 November 1995 arrested in Tampa after Regent Cruise got bankrupt.
1995 Sold to North River Overseas SA. Nassau, Bahamas not renamed.
1996 Sold to Parvati Shipping Co. Ltd., (Louis Cruise Lines), Limassol and renamed THE EMERALD.
2002 Sold to Ionian Cruise Lines SA, Piraeus, not renamed.
2012 Renamed by company in SS EMERALD.
19 June 2012 sold for breaking up.
04 July 2012 left Piraeus under the name SS EMERALD bound for Alang, India for scrapping.
01 August 2012 beached and scrapped by NBM Iron & Steel Trading.

(The tug on the stamp is a Moran tug but not identified.)
