L'ATALANTA French privateer

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Aug 01, 2017 8:35 pm

Of the French privateer L’ATALANTE not much is known till so far, she was fitted out as a privateer in Charleston, South Caroline. She is given as a two masted brig. Where and when built unknown. Most likely she was one of the old American privateers and bought by French interests at the end of the American War of Independence. French sources do not mention her.

Crew of 65 with men from America, French and Ireland, armament 8 – 3 pdrs.
After she left Charleston she captured a brig from Bermuda.
On 02 December 1793 after a month at sea L’ATALANTE sighted the British Post Office Packet ANTELOPE off Cuba.
For the battle see: http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... ope#p18548

The ANTELOPE with her prize L’ATALANTE sailed to Annotto Bay, Jamaica, were most probably the ATALANTE was sold. Her fate is not known.
