Sweden issued in 1978 three stamps to commemorating the centenaries of the birth of three Swedish painters. One of these stamps depicts a symbolic two-masted sailing vessel with a junk-like square sail on each mast. The stamp is designed after a painting entitled “The Homecoming” by Carl Kylberg (1878-1952).
Kylberg painted “The Homecoming” in 1938 after his wife had recovered from a dangerous illness. The subject was one of his favourites: ships with hoisted sails symbolizing man’s voyage through life as well as being a reminder of his days at sea in the early 1890’s.
The painting you can find in the Gothenburg Konstmuseum, Göteborg.
